The Nefarious Design
of Islamic Terrorists in Assam
The word 'Assam' is derived
from the Sanskrit word 'Asama', meaning "unequalled" .
The land of Assam, is in fact, unequalled, judging by her
exquisite natural beauty, cultural richness and human wealth.
Assam has a rich legacy of Hindu culture and civilization behind
her dating from the time of the Mahabharat war. King Bhagadatta,
the son of King Narakasura who ruled from Pragjyotishpura, the
former capital of Assam, was famous for the spirited and valorous
resistance that he demonstrated against the Kauravas. In addition
the great Pandava Arjuna also married the princess of Assam and
had a son by her.
Long known as the cradle of the Shakta aspect of Hinduism, Assam
used to be called Kamarupa. It contained numerous temples
dedicated to the mother goddess including one of the most famous
Shakti shrines at Kamakhya, near modern Guwahati. The Hindu school
of the scientific study between physics and spirituality known as
Tantra was greatly enhanced and documented by the Assamese people.
Of the Hindu kings who ruled Assam, most notable were those of the
Ahom dynasty, who beat back and thoroughly punished the oppressive
Muslim invaders which overcame the rest of India like dark hordes.
The immortal saga of Lachit Barphukan's resounding defeat of the
Mughals is one of the most famous incidents of Assamese history.
The kingdom of the Ahoms reached its height under Rudra Singha
(reign, 1696-1714), the renowned military strategist and patron of
the buranji, or Ahom chronicles. Rudra Singha established
extensive trade with Tibet and built the great city of Rangpur.
During the latter half of the sixteenth century, the revered saint
and Assamese cultural hero, Shankara Deva, inspired a popular
Vaishnavite movement throughout Assam.
During the 1800s, royal dissension paved the way for a Burmese
invasion of Assam, during which millions were massacred. The
British who were ruling much of the rest of India at this time,
felt apprehensive about the growing power of the Burmese and
launched an all out offensive to capture the territory. In 1826,
Assam was annexed by the British. In 1838, the British merged the
entire north eastern region of India to make it a part of the
Bengal Presidency. The move was immediately followed by ample
measures to fully exploit the innumerable natural resources of
Assam. Coal, limestone, and iron mines were opened and the
government offered incentives to Europeans to start plantations
for the production of rubber, chinchona (from which quinine is
derived), hemp, jute, and most importantly, tea. The British used
millions of Assamese as bonded laborers on the tea plantations
alone which produced 145 million pounds of tea annually. Thousands
of missionaries were deliberately brought to Assam in order to
convert the populace to Christianity so that European imperialism
could maintain its stranglehold.
In 1874, Assam was separated from Bengal, and was constituted into
a separate province by itself, with its capital in Shillong. In
1905 the province was amalgamated with east Bengal following the
partition of Bengal into the west and the east. In 1912, the
partition was nullified, and Assam was made a separate province
once more. The British settled thousands of Muslim farmers from
East Bengal in Assam, by giving them huge pieces of land for
cultivation. The primary reason for this was to spread out the
Muslim population and keep internal strife and division within
India alive. This ensured that any resistance by Indians was
weakened.
Many Nepalis, Marwaris and Sikhs, were also brought to Assam in
order to help its development. Although in the short term, this
move helped the development of Assam's resources, in the long
term, it also resulted in growing resentment among the Assamese
about their diminished political & economic powers. The result
of the British policy was the creation of a deep rooted sense of
insecurity and anger among the Assamese, against migrations.
Following Indian independence in 1947, the Assamese won control of
their state assembly and launched a campaign to reassert the
preeminence of Assamese culture in the region and improve
employment opportunities for native Assamese. By this time many of
the tribal districts had been completely converted to Christanity.
Goaded by their European mentors, many of the tribes began
demanding independence from India. In a horrifying move which
would have ominous ramifications for India, Nehru's Congress made
the ill-motivated decision to partition Assam and created the
tribal states of Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur and
Arunachal Pradesh. The act would have disastrous consequences as
it encouraged division and factionalism and weakened the Central
government's control on these regions. The people of Assam were
also outraged and angered by this deliberate decimation of their
State. During the Bangladesh War in 1971, over five million
Bangladeshi Muslims flooded Assam in order to escape murderous
Pakistani Army. In addition many Hindu refugees who were trying to
escape the genocide effected on them, fled to Assam. Whereas the
Hindus from East Bengal assimilated well into the Assamese
populace and also migrated to many other regions of India, the
Muslim Bangladeshis were helped by many of the Muslim landowners
who had been installed there by the British earlier.
The Congress Party encouraged their illegal settlement because the
Muslims cast illegal votes for Indira Gandhi's Congress
government. The blatantly communal appeasement of the Muslims at
Congress hands, infuriated the Assamese. The Bangladeshi Muslims
threatened the very basis of Assamese society by attacking the
Hindu traditions of the land. Moreover there was growing
resentment against the cultural domination of Bengali language.
Most of all however, the people of Assam were angered over the
fact that they were rendered politically powerless due to the
illegal Bangladeshis illegally voting for the Congress. Despite
the fact that Assam held some of the world's richest natural
resources, these resources were never developed for the betterment
of the Assamese people, instead they were steadily exploited and
the secret profits were swallowed by the utterly corrupt members
of the Congress regime. The most dangerous aspect of Congress'
designs for Assam however stemmed from the fact that it
safeguarded the interests of the Muslim elements, many of which
were associated with Pakistan's ISI. Their aim was to weaken and
divide the Assamese against India, so that when Pakistan chose to
attack, it would be a matter of ease for them to annex Assam. The
Bangladeshi Muslims who were illegally occupying Assamese land,
would be the inside face of Pakistan's attack if the need arose.
This plan was further strengthened by the emerging Muslim
fundamentalist organizations in Assam.
When anger against the Bangladeshi Muslims erupted in Student
protests in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Congress silenced
them with guns. The grass-roots political movement demanding
safeguarding of the interests of the Assamese was largely peaceful
and was whole-heartedly supported by almost all native people of
the state including many of the Hindu migrants from East Bengal .
Many of the Assamese felt that it was a war for survival against
the onslaught of uncontrolled migration of millions of Muslims
from Bangladesh. The Congress responded with police firing to
suppress the movement. The Assamese leaders were completely
ignored by the Indira Gandhi government and in some cases even
assassinated by the Congress in its fascist thirst for power at
any cost.
As a consequence, Assam was engulfed in some of the worst communal
violence in India since Partition. The Hindus were enraged at the
utter inequity of a political power play which granted such power
to the illegal Bangladeshi Muslims.
In 1985, a treaty was signed by the Assamese and the Government of
India. This was followed by an election in which a very youthful,
student-led government by the Asom Gana Parishad party came to
power. Despite the immense expectations among the people about
this government, the Congress ensured that it infiltrated the
ranks of the party. The manipulative Congress engineered internal
bickering and corruption, in order to weaken and eventually bring
the downfall of the Asom Gana Parishad Ministry in 1990. In the
meantime a movement to demand separation from India was being
stoked by the Congress and Islamic fundamentalists of Assam. The
result was a terrorist military group called ULFA, The United
Liberation Front of Asom.
This was followed by a spate of many other groups demanding
autonomy. The Muslims and Congress worked in collusion to recruit
many of the poorer youths, who were prime targets for manipulation
because of their economic deprivation. Initially although the ULFA
was supported to some extent by the Assamese populace, over time
it became increasingly obvious that the ULFA was acting as nothing
more than a slave organization to the ISI. Many of the ULFA
leaders were exposed as thoroughly corrupt terrorists who were
reaping the profits of drug smuggling and illegal arms at the
behest of ISI. It soon became painfully obvious to the Assamese
that the ULFA leaders were only interested in lining their own
pockets and cared nothing for the progress of Assam.
That the ULFA is a part of the ISI's designs to destabilize the
North Eastern region where it has developed an elaborate network
for smuggling of arms, narcotics, explosives and counterfeit money
is an established fact. Anjan Jyoti Gogoi, former Assistant
General Secretary of ULFA who was killed by the outfit last year,
had admitted that the organization was being aided and abetted by
the ISI and other fundamentalist groups such as the 'Jamat-E-Islami'.
He had also alleged that the ULFA top brass had become so inured
to their bohemian lifestyles funded by these organizations, that
the outfit had become a slave to them.
That Muslim organizations are well in control of terrorism in
Assam is also established by several recent developments.
In May, 1999 the Indian Government received sensational
information clearly indicating direct contact between a group of
Kashmiri Muslim Terrorists and two extremist Muslim terrorist
outfits of Assam - Muslim Tiger Force and Revolutionary Muslim
Commandos. These Muslim groups which operate in the North East
states owe their allegiance to the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and
Lashkar-e-Toiba, two of the world's most murderous Islamic
terrorist groups.
Two other Muslim militant organizations, namely, Muslim Liberation
Tigers of Assam (MLTA) and Muslim Liberation Army(MLA) are
training batches of Muslim terrorists and criminals in Jammu and
Kashmir, particularly in Poonch and Rajouri sectors. Yet another
sensational connection has been unearthed with the discovery of a
recent clandestine visit by Muslim terrorists belonging to the
Muslim Liberation Tigers of Assam to Kashmir and Rajouri sector as
"tourists".
The captured terrorists revealed that Pakistan is pumping immense
sums of money into the north-eastern region of India with periodic
messages from across the border to have a particular portion of
the money thus received transferred to the "specified"
persons in Jammu and Kashmir. Since 1990 more than NINE Muslim
terrorist organizations have taken root in Assam alone.
The List of Assamese Islamic terrorist organizations is truly mind
boggling:
Muslim Liberation Army
Muslim Liberation Tigers of Assam
Muslim Security Force
Islamic United Reformation Protest of India
United Muslim Liberation Front of Assam
Revolutionary Muslim Commandos
Islamic Liberation Army of Assam
Islamic Sevak Sangh
Muslim Tiger Force.
All of the above organizations have bases in Islamic countries,
such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Sudan and
Egypt. In relation to this,, the Government has also established
the Islamic support base of other outfits like United Liberation
Front of Assam (ULFA), NSCN(IM), NSCN(Khaplang) and Bodo
Liberation Tiger Force in Bangladesh, Myanmar and Bhutan. These
terrorists send their "representatives" to foreign
nations and their "representatives" lead lavish style of
life there. The greatest amount of money is being pumped in by a
Britain based non-governmental agency. The British agency is
providing massive quantum of money to assist the terrorists in
what they call "human rights violations in the North
East"
Most recently however the Kargil conflict revealed the true colors
of ULFA to the Assamese people. As a consequence of its open
support to Pakistan, ULFA's credibility has been mortally wounded
and the the terrorist organization finds itself completely
alienated from the common people. Even as Indian forces were
engaged in a fierce battle in Kargil to push Pakistani Islamic
terrorists out of India, the ULFA declared that it would support
Pakistan, putting to rest any doubts about their links with ISI.
In a press conference, Arabinda Rajkhowa, Chairman of ULFA
described the Pakistani terrorists as 'freedom fighters', who like
the ULFA were fighting against " forcible occupation of their
land by India"!! He urged the Assamese soldiers fighting in
Kargil to pull out of Indian Army which he alleged, was an
occupation force He also appealed to the people of Assam to donate
money to ULFA for its efforts to liberate the State, instead of
contributing money for the relief of the Indian Army engaged in
the Kargil conflict.
Further proof of the ULFA's nexus with the ISI were revealed with
the Army's interception of phone calls being made by the outfit to
ISI agents in Pakistan on the movement of troops from the region.
In two separate press statements, issued (June 24, 1999) to a
section of local vernacular dailies, Arbinda Rajkhowa ( Chairman,
ULFA) exhorted all the Assamese Army Personnel to refrain from
taking part in the 'war' presently going on and alleged that
Kashmir, like Assam, was never an integral part of India and that
the Kashmiri people, like the Assamese people, had all along been
protesting against the 'illegal occupation by India'. In a clear
indicator of his Islamic motivations, he also described the
present conflict in Kashmir as a 'pre-election strategy of the
Hindu communalist Government of Delhi'.
The ISI sponsored elements proceeded to intensify their efforts to
target vital installations in the North-East, with the backing of
ULFA. The bomb explosion at New Jalpaiguri station in North Bengal
on June 22, in which three Army personnel bound for Kargil were
among the nine killed, was an clear indicator to the Assamese of
the ISI's game-plan to sabotage the war effort and create
subversion in the region.
The Kargil conflict however revealed the true nature of how ULFA
has been affected by ISI designs. Faced with the Islamic
fundamentalists and terrorist groups financed by ISI on the one
hand and a steady influx of more illegal Bangladeshi Muslims on
the other, the people of Assam are increasingly fearful for the
safety and security of their land.
The most positive aspect of these developments however is the
rejuvenated and renewed sense of Indianness and patriotism among
the youth of Assam. When ULFA made their press statement that its
cadres would fight on the side of the Pakistanis and called upon
the Assamese soldiers in the Indian Army to defect to the
Pakistani side. the majority of the Assamese were horrified. The
valor and bravery of Assamese Kargil heroes such as Captain Jintu
Gogoi and Udhab Das in the high Northern Himalayas had deeply
affected the people. Their pride at the supreme sacrifice of these
Assamese heroes, coupled with the centuries old knowledge of their
identity as Indians, created a sense of outrage against ULFA among
the common folks.
By brandishing its support for the Islamic terrorism of Pakistan,
ULFA had committed the final miscalculation in understanding the
nature of its own cadres as well as that of the Assamese youth.
Not a single volunteer responded to ULFA's call to fight against
the Indian Army for the Pakistanis. Even those who had sympathized
with certain demands of the outlawed organisation, could not
reconcile themselves to the terrorist outfit's love for Pakistan.
When ULFA found that it had no support from the press or the
intellectual leaders, it began a campaign to condemn these
highly-respected intellectuals. These actions even further
alienated them from the mainstream Assamese society. In fact ever
since ULFA's announcement to fight for Pakistan, young ULFA cadres
have been coming out in droves to surrender themselves to the
Army. Many of these young volunteers now want to sign up for the
Indian Army instead!
Besides the ULFA, other militant outfits, too, have suffered loss
of public support, born mostly out of fear. Recently the villagers
of Bhurabari, in Morigaon district. which has been terrorized by
the Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam, raided the
terrorists armory and handed over the weapons to the civil
administration. In Majuli too, the villagers have been giving a
tough time to ULFA activists. During the Kargil conflict, the poor
villagers, despite being hard-pressed by floods, recently paid
their tributes to the martyrs. All over Assam, functions have been
held to pay tributes to Kargil heroes. A whopping Rs 60 lakh has
been contributed by the people of Assam to the Chief Minister's
Army Welfare Fund.
The behavior and nationalistic character displayed by the Assamese
and many of the North Eastern states during the Kargil conflict
showed that when it came to defending the country, the most
neglected region, is second to none.
The people of Assam are also encouraged by the BJP government's
positive steps which have initiated the process of developing
Assam for its people. Last month PM Vajpayee presented Srimanta
Sankaradeva Awards to Kargil heroes of Assam and paid effusive
tribute to their contributions. The Central Government has also
made significant investments to create a better economic
infrastructure, like the Numaligarh Oil Refinery . Now Guwahati
also boasts of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology
which has just graduated its first batch of engineers. Earlier the
PM had announced a moratorium on repayment of the Central
Government loan availed by Assam for its flood management during
his recent one-day visit to the State.
In contrast ULFA has displayed that it cared nothing for Assam's
development by declaring a ban on all oil exploration in the area.
The news of the discovery of a new oil field with 'enormous
potential' had come as a great relief and joy to both the
Government of Assam and the people of Assam. In another instance,
ULFA's deafening silence about the unending stream of illegal
Bangladeshi infiltrators has made it the villain in people's eyes.
The result is quite apparent. The people of Assam are fed up of
talk of separatism. They have proved time and time again that they
are loyal to India alone and care only about developing &
improving the impoverished condition of their beautiful and
resource rich state. Pakistan's ISI has noticed ULFA's waning
influence with increasing alarm. They have realized that Assam is
no Kashmir where Islam can be raised as a slogan to rally forces
against India. Out of sheer desperation, the ISI is now hell-bent
in disrupting and creating utter chaos in Assam and severing it
from India
ISI's complex plan to create an independent Islamic state in the
North-East in conjunction to their terrorism in Kashmir, was
revealed following the arrest in of two ISI operatives and two
terrorists of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen in Assam last week. The
plan unfolded last week with a number of bomb blasts in different
parts of Assam using explosives supplied by the ISI. The primary
aim was to disrupt the movement of the army and other security
forces to the north-eastern region.
One of the ISI members revealed that he served as recruiting agent
who trained Muslim youths of Assam in subversive activities to
create an independent Islamic country encompassing the entire
North East, so that it could later annex Bangladesh as well. The
objective would be to create a "Greater Islamic State".
The ISI agents and terrorists usually arrive in Dhaka in
neighboring Bangladesh from Karachi through Pakistan Airlines
flights , then they proceed to meet other ISI terrorists who
arrange the supply of explosives to the Muslim extremists in
Assam. Next they sneak into India through areas like Karimganj.
After reaching Guwahati, they get in touch with their Muslim
'contacts' in the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and the United Liberation
Front of Asom.
The consignment of explosives is then used by ULFA , as well as
other Islamic terrorist groups like the Harkat and some of it is
also sent to Jammu and Kashmir. A string of incidents last week
alone demonstrated that these explosives were used regularly in
bomb blasts to drive home the message to the Indian people that
ISI's action plan is in full swing
August 7, 1999
Passengers of the Guwahati-bound North-East Express had a narrow
escape when a powerful bomb exploded on the tracks near Bijni
station in Bongaigon district. A pilot engine was derailed. In two
other explosions the same day, two transmission towers of the
Power Grid Corporation were damaged in Barpeta district.
August 8, 1999
An explosion destroyed a bridge between Athiabari and Patgaon in
Kokrajhar district, on National Highway 31 and severed road links
with much of the North-East. A major rail mishap was also averted
when security forces foiled a bid by terrorists to plant a bomb
under a railway bridge at Salakati. A 3 foot crater was found. But
the terrorists managed to escape.
August 9, 1999
Six bogies of a goods train derailed and the driver, assistant
driver and three security personnel were injured when a bomb went
off on the New Jalpaiguri Bongaigon section of the North-East
Frontier Railway in Assam. The remote-controlled device, planted
by ULFA under a bridge between Salakati and Kokrajhar stations,
was set off at about 0210 IST, just a little while before the New
Delhi-Guwahati Rajdhani Express was to pass that way. All rail
services were suspended following the derailment.
August 10, 1999
A Central Reserve Police Force party had a narrow escape, but road
traffic was disrupted following a powerful explosion on the
national highway at Ghograpar in Nalbari district of Assam. The
bomb was so powerful that a huge crater was formed at the site,
disrupting road traffic. The CRPF party escaped narrowly as the
bomb exploded immediately after their vehicle passed the spot.
August 11, 1999
Passengers of 5617 up Arunachal Express had a providential escape
when a powerful bomb exploded on the railway tracks between Majbat
and Dhekaijuliroad stations in lower Assam shortly before the
Arunachal Express was scheduled to pass the area. A security pilot
engine preceding the passenger train was damaged and its driver
injured in the blast. The bomb was planted under a railway bridge
over river Paschnoi on Rangia-Tezpur metre gauge section between
Darrang and Sonitpur districts and exploded at about 2045 hours
damaging the bridge.
It is clear now that the ISI has concrete plans to decimate and
destroy all links between Assam and India. It is being ably
supported in this endeavor by the foolish ULFA and the millions of
Bangladeshi Muslims who have infiltrated Assam, all of whom have
been implanted by the Congress regime of past years. This is a
critical juncture for Assam, because ironically for the first
time, the Assamese are showing their support for a central
government which has the interests of the state at heart. The
people of this magnificent state are now reiterating and
rediscovering their loyalty to India and their identity as
Indians. What Assam needs most of all is a full blown structure of
support and agendas for development of its natural resources so
that the neglected Assamese can finally live as secure and
prosperous citizens of India.
The responsibility for allowing Assam to slip into the hands of
Islamic terrorists and the murderous Pakistani ISI, must rest
squarely on the shoulders of the Congress. For decades the power
mongering, corruption and greed of Congress politicians have
enabled millions of Bangladeshi Muslims to infiltrate and snatch
away the very land from the Assamese who own it. The Congress has
also ensured that the policies of development which could have
transformed the economic deprivation of the Assamese, never took
place.
Unfortunately for the BJP, it is now upto them to reap the
poisoned fruits of the Congress' malevolent actions. The rising
surge of Indian patriotism within the Assamese people's hearts
coupled with the support of the entire Indian nation is the only
way to tide over this national crisis. Let Pakistan and the
warriors of Islam beware.
The people of this wild and beautiful home of the Devi, will not
allow it to become another Kashmir, for they live in a land which
has no equal - Assam .
