OMAR THE AUTONOMOUS
The first thing that the grandson of
Sheikh Abdullah did upon being crowned the new leader of the
"National Conference" (NC) was announce his demand for
Kashmir’s autonomy. Now, the NC is purely a Kashmir oriented
outfit with no concerns for the rest of the nation. There aren’t
even any branch offices in other states. So the question arises,
what is "national" about it ?
The answer is, they consider Kashmir
itself to be a nation distinct and separate from India ! Autonomy is
just a start for them – the real objective is total independence.
The talk about opposition to separatists is just an eyewash. The
only difference between the Hurriyat Conference and National
Conference seems to be that the former acts as Pakistan’s front
while the latter wants to be independent. But Omar’s autonomous or
free Kashmir shall be in very real danger of being swallowed whole
by the python of Pakistan who is waiting for just some such
development. There won’t be any help from the West either because
of the geo-political chess-games involved ! What would then remain
of his much-craved-for autonomy is a matter verging on the
hilarious. Perhaps Musharraf would consider allowing him some sort
of autonomous behavior in an ISI controlled prison cell ! Anyways,
it is more likely that Omar and his dad will flee to the UK in such
an eventuality and continue their breast-beating for the A-word from
some London address until they die. There won’t be any political
career options open for the fourth generation of the Abdullah family
in that case. Case closed !
