"…….HINDUS AWAKE !!"
By: J. Kathe
Editorial for: 7-26-00

The causes which led to the dismissal of the Thackeray case shouldn’t really suffice for elation; they were all technical rather than emotional or intellectual. Freedom of expression exists in India, so they say; yet you never know when the courts might summon you for having incited "communal hatred" ! Indeed our Constitution takes away by one hand , that which it gifts by the other.

What is the definition of the term, "inciting communal hatred" anyway ? For example, it is a fact that the Koran declares war on all faiths permitting idol-worship. If someone expresses this real fact in public, what is that person supposed to be doing ? Inciting communal hatred ? Or expressing the "truth ?" On the one hand, the Constitution proclaims, "speak truth freely"; one the other, it books you for doing it !

Are we to assume then that the Indian Constitution has categorised "truth" itself ? Are we to assume that under it, the expression of only selected "truths" is permitted ? And if so, shouldn’t we be saying that our Constitution itself has an in-built mechanism permitting double- standards in official policy ?

All sane people will agree that the protection of minority interests doesn’t in the least imply trampling those of the majority community. Yet, this is exactly what is happening in India ! Look at our history texts which are a compulsory study in all school and college syllabi :

Rank villains have been portrayed as "great emperors"; entire epochs of history have been actually manipulated; selfless patriots have been painted in dirty communal colours and squeamish dim-wits described as international heroes ! Such is the "secular" history that is dished out to the tender-aged children, the tragedy continuing even after their graduation from high school. Is it any wonder then that the lay citizenery knows so little about Hindutva ? Or about our true cultural heritage ? It was Macaulay’s dream to indoctrinate the Hindus with false history – that dream is still being executed ever so faithfully in India !

It is thus the anti-national spirit of the very theory of post-1947 Indian polity, that has inflicted such a lethal blow to the sense of Hindu cultural heritage. Only through such a consciousness can the true problems facing our nation be exposed. The history of "Bharatiya culture" is an epic of Hindu culture ! This land is the only holy-land of Hindus ! It is the Hindus who have irrigated Hindustan with their very blood ! The great cultural traditions of India are Hindu traditions !

So long as this awareness remains enchained in the Constitution-sanctioned pseudo-secular nonsense, the rise of a strong edifice of Hindu cultural nationalism will not be possible. It is said that "respect yourself, that others might respect you." Indeed, if the Hindus themselves don’t acknowledge and respect the great Vedic heritage, why would others ? If Hindus themselves don’t voice the insults and abuses hurled at India’s history and her culture, who will ?
